One price, quoted before pickup
Freight, US customs clearance, duties and door delivery land in a single all-in number. Delivered duty paid, so nothing is due when the boxes reach the door.

This page is the founder's account of what Plain Freight is, why it exists, and how the agent system behind it actually works. If you just want a price for a shipment, go straight to plainfreight.com.
Plain Freight is a China to USA freight agency for small importers, founded by Melkon Hovhannisyan in 2026. It quotes freight, US customs clearance, duties and US door delivery as one all-in DDP price before the shipment moves, handles shipments from 100 g up to roughly 2,000 kg, and runs the operation with a crew of AI agents supervised by a human.

Freight, US customs clearance, duties and door delivery land in a single all-in number. Delivered duty paid, so nothing is due when the boxes reach the door.
From a 100 g sample to roughly 2,000 kg. Small parcels, single high-value items and FBA replenishment are the core business, not a favour done between containers.
Agents quote, prepare documents, chase the warehouse and write the updates. Anything touching money, an unusual product or a promise to a third party stops at me.
Most of my work is software: backend systems, cloud infrastructure and AI in production. Plain Freight is a physical business, and that is the point. Freight forwarding for small shipments is slow, manual and full of repetitive coordination: quoting, chasing a warehouse, filling customs forms, copying tracking numbers between systems, answering the same three questions for the hundredth time. Almost none of that needs human judgement. All of it needs someone who never forgets a step.
Big forwarders are built for big accounts. Ship containers every week and you get an account manager and good rates. Ship 100 g to 2,000 kg at a time, which is the reality for most Amazon FBA sellers, Shopify brands and independent importers, and you are too small to matter. You overpay a courier, or you fight a portal that assumes you already speak HS codes, incoterms and customs bonds.
Then duty-free de minimis treatment was suspended for goods from every country, so shipments valued at $800 or less stopped being exempt and became subject to all applicable duties, taxes and fees (US Customs and Border Protection fact sheet). A wall of customs paperwork and duties landed on exactly the people with the least support to handle it. Plain Freight exists to take that wall away and quote one honest number instead. The promise is deliberately small: ship from China, don't worry about the rest.
Air small-parcel service is live and delivered duty paid; sea LCL runs with indicative pricing. Current per-product numbers and transit times are published openly on the pricing page and the shipping cost by product tables, straight from the live rate card rather than from a brochure.
Plain Freight is not one large AI. It is a set of specialised agents, each owning a lane of the operation the way a real freight desk is organised, which makes each one testable and each handoff inspectable.
A shipment description, by form or by email, comes back as a written offer with real numbers from the live rate card. No sales call, no portal login, no waiting for a human to be awake in the right timezone.
The China warehouse gets the pickup details, the cartons get weighed and measured, and the offer is re-checked against the measured weight before anyone is asked to pay.
HS classification, commercial invoice and packing list are prepared and reviewed, then handed to a licensed US broker who files the entry.
The shipment is watched to the door and the customer gets plain-language updates on a tracking link rather than a carrier reference they have to decode themselves.
Restricted goods, a customs hold, a missing document or an unusual route are escalated instead of guessed. The agent writes the recommendation; a person decides.
Other AI agents can price a shipment directly through a public offer API and an MCP server, with no key and no human in the loop. Freight is a good first place to let agents transact.
The machine-readable side is documented publicly for other agents at plainfreight.com/for-agents. I wrote up the same architecture in more depth in Building Plain Freight, and the general pattern behind it in how I automate my own work with agent loops.
The approval gate is the product, not a safety blanket bolted on afterwards. The agents watch, read, decide and write the full message. Every send that leaves the company to a customer, a partner or a broker can be held for a human tap, and anything involving money, a restricted product or a commitment to a third party always is.
That is also why some quotes deliberately come back without a number. If the goods look like batteries, food or chemicals, automated pricing is withheld on purpose and a person reviews the shipment before anyone is quoted. An agency that will not quote a shipment it cannot legally move is more useful than one that quotes everything and apologises at customs.
The agents are Python on the Claude API, with cheap fast models doing routine classification and stronger models reserved for genuinely hard calls like an ambiguous HS code. Events run through AWS Lambda with SQS and SNS, state lives in Supabase, documents are generated as PDFs and stored in S3, and the customer-facing site is a Next.js app. Partner coordination with the China side runs over WeChat Work, broker communication over email, approvals over Telegram.
None of those are exotic choices. The interesting part is not the tools, it is wiring them into agents that can carry a shipment from quote to delivery with a single person supervising. That engineering problem, not the freight, is what I find worth writing about, and it is the same territory I work in as an AI consultant in Barcelona.
The company is operating. Quotes go out, shipments move, customs entries get filed, cartons land in Amazon FBA warehouses and at residential doors in the United States. Payment is by ACH or wire to a US bank account, with nothing due until the cartons are weighed at the China warehouse, so a customer is never paying against an estimate.
It was built manual-first on purpose. Take real shipments, feel the real friction, then automate each step once it is understood. That is the path Flexport's founder took, brokering by hand before writing code, and it is the reason the automation here is specified by awkward customs questions and warehouse miscommunications that actually happened. Guides written from those shipments are published for importers at plainfreight.com/guides.
Next is depth rather than breadth: a sharper HS classifier, fully automatic document generation, a customs pre-check that catches common filing errors before submission, and a landed-cost view that includes every fee. If you import from China, the fastest way to see where it stands is to ask it for a price.

Plain Freight was founded by Melkon Hovhannisyan, a Barcelona-based founder, CTO and senior software engineer. He is also Co-founder and CTO of Direlli, a former Forbes Technology Council member and a WorldSkills Web Technologies Champion. He personally approves any decision that touches money, an unusual product or a commitment to a third party.
Small importers, Amazon FBA sellers, Shopify and TikTok Shop brands, and trading companies moving anything from a 100 g sample up to roughly 2,000 kg. These are exactly the shipments large forwarders deprioritise, which is why they are the core business here.
Two things. The price is all-in and quoted before pickup instead of assembled from surcharges afterwards, and the operation is run by AI agents rather than an inbox of account managers, so a quote takes minutes instead of days. Every consequential decision still has a named human behind it.
One number covers China warehouse pickup, air freight or sea LCL, US customs clearance, duties (delivered duty paid), licensed broker coordination, commercial invoice and packing list review, and delivery to a US address or an Amazon FBA warehouse. There is nothing to settle at the door.
Because freight for small shipments is a real, unglamorous operation full of repetitive coordination, and that is the kind of work AI agents actually do well. Building the company and the automation together means the software is specified by real shipments rather than by assumptions.
Yes. Plain Freight publishes an instant-offer API and an MCP server that any agent can call without an API key, returning all-in USD options for a China to USA shipment. Restricted goods are deliberately withheld from automated pricing and routed to a person.

Send what you are shipping, how heavy it is and where it is going. A written offer with real numbers comes back, not a form letter asking you to book a call.
